Photography by Tsuneaki Hiramatsu
Beach House – Myth (Air Drops Remixed)
In the three years between 2008 and 2011, Tsuneaki Hiramatsu stationed himself at two sites in Okayama prefecture to capture the flight of fireflies. One set of photographs was taken in the woods near Niimi City, while another was shot at a river located at the Hokubo area in Okayama City. The paths of fireflies are traced through a series of golden dots and streaks that speckle the entire photographic still, endowing it with a magical quality. Although indiscernible in the photographs, those taken in the woods capture a species of firefly called the Genji Botaru, while the fireflies inhabiting the river are of the Hime Botaru species. Surreal, ethereal and breathtakingly beautiful, the evocative photographs transport us into another sphere.
